New memorial fund supports vocational education

November 10, 2022

ASHLAND – A devoted ambassador of vocational education, Jim Fish was passionate about helping students gain skills that would benefit their own lives and offer vital contributions in the workforce.

After he passed away last year, his family created the Jim Fish Vocational Education Fund in his memory. The fund’s creation was announced at a recent Celebration of Life event held at the Ashland County West Holmes Career Center.

The new endowment fund will offer support for students to get started in a range of fields at the Career Center. The costs of toolkits and graphic design supplies can present serious barriers to students in need. This fund will cover these costs for designated students, while promoting the value of the vocational arts in Fish’s memory.

“We are honored to help keep Jim Fish’s memory alive by carefully managing this fund and ensuring that it benefits local students at the Career Center for years to come,” said Jim Cutright, President/CEO of Ashland County Community Foundation.

Fish dedicated over thirty years to teaching a range of skills, from woodworking, to driving, to small engine mechanics. He shared knowledge from his degree in agricultural engineering as an educator at Ashland High School and the Career Center.

In addition to his role in public education, he also owned and managed a repair business called Ashland Mower and served in various leadership roles and volunteer positions in the Ashland County community.

“Our father lived his belief in vocational education, as he contributed in so many forms to his students and the wider community,” said Jennifer Fish, daughter of Jim. “A true Ashland Ambassador, he found his greatest fulfillment in service to others. We are so grateful for the gifts he shared and the spirit of generosity he embodied throughout his life.

“Through the Ashland County Community Foundation model, we are delighted to take part in a larger vision to amplify the impact of those who dedicated so much to this very special place.”

Contributions of any size may be added to the fund by anyone at any time. All donations make an impact and honor a life devoted to education and community service.
