Pathfinder Farms

Pathfinder Farms has, for many years, helped local youth find their purpose and reach their potential through its many program offerings. Located near Hayesville and run by Jon and Sandy Burkholder, Pathfinder offers programs that aim to positively impact these kids’ lives to help them create a bright future. Whether it’s in the kitchen or woodshop, out in the woods or around a campfire, Jon and Sandy and their group of volunteers use a variety of ways to incorporate what they see as needed skills to thrive.

In recent years, the organization has expanded from primarily serving young men to meeting the needs of more young women in the community. Support from one of our Women’s Fund Grants has helped Pathfinder Farms to meet that need.

Now, with funding for equipment and program development, the young women in these programs can gain the skills they need to lead a successful life. The grant helps to equip the Fields of Grace program — which helps young women from ages 13-18 — with a table, chairs and appliances for the kitchen and laundry room. The goal is to teach the skills needed to run a household. Beyond learning household skills, the girls take part in woodworking, archery, gardening and other outdoor activities.

Other female participants at Pathfinder Farms include those in its Gem Seeker program, which are 8 – 13-year-old girls.

These grant dollars enable Pathfinder Farms to operate these programs while allowing for separate spaces for ages and genders, particularly in the colder months when participants can’t be outside as frequently.
